Get to know our London Dry spirit
Want to know more about the most awarded mid-strength London Dry "gin alternative" available? You've come to the right place!
Here's some headlines:
- Our light spirit made with London Dry Gin is 20% ABV - half the alcoholic strength of a typical gin, and containing half the calories.
- Some call it a "mid-strength spirit". We prefer "light spirit"
- It is made with the same botanical ingredients and using the same distillation processes as a traditional London Dry.
- The Cut Classic London Dry is actually made in some of the oldest working copper stills in the UK, dating back to the 1860s.
- We partner with a Master Distiller at a leading UK distillery to produce a 20% ABV alternative to full strength gin which packs in all of the flavours, aromas and satisfaction that you would expect.
- Our lower alcohol London Dry is the only mid-strength gin alternative which holds medals from the two most prestigious international spirit competitions: The International Spirit Challenge (ISC) and the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC).
So, how do we get to a spirit that tastes, smells and satisfies like a traditional London Dry gin, but with half the alcohol?
Well, some of that is a trade secret. But what we can tell you is that we stick to traditional distillation methods, whilst increasing the quality, quantity and concentration of the botanicals that are used to infuse our spirit. We never add any kind of additional flavouring (no artificial flavouring, no so-called 'natural flavouring' made by a flavour company), preferring for the botanicals to speak for themselves.
What should you expect?
In a nutshell, a spirit that looks, smells and tastes like a classic London Dry Gin... with a softer, more elegant style. Expect the same versatility that you would demand from any gin - able to stand up to scrutiny in everything from a classic G&T to a (very) dry martini!
Why make at lower strength gin alternative?
The good folk at Tanqueray are fond of saying that their recipe has remained unchanged since 1830. We admire that tradition and track record. But the world has changed quite a lot in the past couple of hundred years!!
Today we are far more aware of the harm that excessive alcohol can do. We are more aware of the 'empty calories' found in alcoholic drinks, and the negative impact that they can have on weight, waistline and health. We also have busy, active and wide-ranging lifestyles - realistically incompatible with the regular consumption of strong liquor.
It isn't a moral crusade; simply a recognition that the world in 2025 is very different to that of 1830. We might equally flip the question around and ask why major distillers persist in maintaining the ABV of their gin, and other spirits, at a level that is increasingly regarded as potentially harmful? That is one for them to answer.
Here at Cut Classics we are content with offering the leading lower strength alternative to a classic London Dry. Nothing more, nothing less.
Our Messages Remain Simple and Consistent
From the very start of Cut Classics we have offered two simple messages.
The first tells you clearly what makes our drinks different from traditional spirits: "Half the Alcohol & Calories".
The second tells you what we stand for: "Moderation Without Compromise".
We are told that we should categorise our drinks as "mid-strength spirits", but we don't like that terminology at all. Sure, 20% is bang on mid-strength! But we have always referred to our drinks as "light spirits", because it's a phrase that talks to all aspects of the drinks rather than only the alcohol content. They are light in the sense of being lower alcohol and lower calorie. They are light and elegant in terms of style. It is about more than just ABV.
We hope that you will join the increasing numbers of people who are choosing to "Sip the Light Fantastic" with a Cut Classic!
